Experiment 4

An attempt to visualise how a codebase changed over a year, drawn from git history. Beautiful, and I have not yet found a decision it would help anyone make.

  1. Archived: pretty, not useful

Showed it to four people. All four said it looked great. None of them could name a decision it would change.

That is the whole story. It is a visualisation in search of a question, and I would rather archive it honestly than keep polishing it because it is nice to look at.

If I come back to this, it will be from the other direction: find someone with a question about their codebase's history first, then draw only what answers it.

  2. It renders

Parses the log, buckets commits by directory and week, and animates the result. Watching a year of a project compress into fifteen seconds is genuinely absorbing.

Absorbing is not the same as informative, which is starting to bother me.
